I only occasionally post in progress projects, but thought I'd start a semi-weekly Wednesday column documenting a force in progress. This is the start of my air-mobile force, I haven't developed any fluff for these guys yet, but they'll be fighting Rebel Sons of Thunder over a new urban/industrial battle board in the works.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the first photo we have one of Ravenstar Studios new dropships, two Khurasan Kestrels, a halo Micro-Ops Falcon that have just delivered their payload of GZG New Israeli infantry. I will also be including a pair of Rebel Minis Vipers that have yet to be assembled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You can see the conversion work on the Falcon below. I've cut out the existing jump seats and installed a GZG plasma ground mount. It's mounted in place magnetically on a custom collar for ease of painting, plus if I paint up variant weapon mounts, I'll be able to swap them out as necessary. The chin gun has also been replaced with a sensor unit (also magnetically mounted).</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just completed a test paint for a new force I'm working on and decided to solicit some feedback. Does anyone else try and simulate wear and tear on heavily-armored 15mm infantry? I took a crack at it with my test paint below, and, while I'm not unhappy with the result, I'm not sure if the added steps enhance it all that much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't really pick up on the scrapes on the armor and filth on the boots unless I have the model held within a foot of my nose. I'm inclined to just continue along with my "fresh off the assembly line" look. What do you think? Tips, suggestions, feedback?</div>

I didn't know what to expect, I haven't seen much in the way of review of these, and didn't own any of their other vehicles yet. I wrapped up the paint yesterday so now I'm posting the results.<br />
<br />
Although I have a couple of small issues with the kits, I'm pleased enough with them overall. They are slightly larger than I expected, being slightly bigger than two comparable kits from GZG and Combat Wombat. There is a lot of very nice detail on the hulls of these tanks, recessed panel lines, vents and greeblies. The castings were very clean, no air bubbles and required only a small amount of clean up. The metal turrets for each were equally clean.<br />
<br />

I do have some small complaints about the kits. The resin seems to resist priming. I eventually scrubbed them with Simple Green and got the gesso I prime with to stick, but it took multiple washings. In hindsight I wonder if I need to use a specialty spray primer in the future. I also have a couple small issues with the turrets- if I don't magnetize them, I usually let them float free so they can pivot. In the case of the missile tank, the turret is back heavy and wants to tip off onto the rear hull. The MBT turret I like well enough except the collar that supports the assembly seems excessively tall. The base of the collar is beveled to fit into a ring in the hull, so I was hesitant to try and grind it down and struggle to match the angle.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Myself and fellow wargamer, Dylan, got in a good sized battle of Gruntz today. It ran long, unfortunately, and prevented us from getting in our planned game of Stargrunt. Even so, we had great fun and plan to move Stargrunt up the order to make certain it gets some play.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">The army I used is displayed below- </span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-auto;">200 points of North American States mechanized terror. The unit cards were constructed using the excellent </span><a href="http://gruntomatic.com/" style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Gruntomatic</a><span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-auto;"> army builder. It allows me to export force and unit cards to PDF for easy access on my iPad during play. Using Goodreader I can mark damage and annotate the unit cards. Coupled with my PDF copy of Gruntz, I can have an entirely paperless play field. It took a little time to get used to switching between the apps, but overall it worked great.</span>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RdLeZjn2Z2k/UAtLLwZvenI/AAAAAAAAAmg/INvzf385EGg/s1600/NAS+Force.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="background-color: white; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RdLeZjn2Z2k/UAtLLwZvenI/AAAAAAAAAmg/INvzf385EGg/s400/NAS+Force.bmp" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">The initial setup can be seen below, I concentrated my force behind the office complex out of line of sight of Dylan's ferociously large mech, seen stage right. The rest of his force was infantry lined up in the center of his deployment area and anchored by his Guardsman IFV on the far end. Out of sight, near the table center in the trees are two of Dylan's Hyperion battlesuits. The last time we played, these units decimated my forces.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QoQtUk2DKqw/UAtLZyPWpAI/AAAAAAAAAmo/MkGk4A0YYTM/s1600/Initial+Setup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="background-color: white; display: inline !important; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="155" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QoQtUk2DKqw/UAtLZyPWpAI/AAAAAAAAAmo/MkGk4A0YYTM/s400/Initial+Setup.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Dylan won the initiative and started the first turn, moving most of his units up the field with double and flank moves, meaning he wasn't able to initiate any fire. Out of sight in the photo to the right his IFV made a full flank move down the table edge towards a small copse of trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pHfz_6ZrGZs/UAtLffe--8I/AAAAAAAAAmw/9bqsppm7Zbw/s1600/Turn+1+End-+Jeff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pHfz_6ZrGZs/UAtLffe--8I/AAAAAAAAAmw/9bqsppm7Zbw/s320/Turn+1+End-+Jeff.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In my phase, my two IFVs sped towards the threat on the flank (away from the big, scary mech), while my gunship and missile tank engaged the battlesuits in the cover of the trees, destroying one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-__Qvc03Kr_U/UAtLkGECxuI/AAAAAAAAAm8/15CTsUN1LcA/s1600/Turn+1+End-+Jeff2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-__Qvc03Kr_U/UAtLkGECxuI/AAAAAAAAAm8/15CTsUN1LcA/s400/Turn+1+End-+Jeff2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Dylan continued his press up the field in turn two. His infantry in the open field were pushed forward by his commander before diving prone to take available of some cover, the battlesuit in the trees followed suit hoping to avoid the fire that had shredded his partner. He targeted the VTOL with his primary gun, but could not make contact. The mech continued to close, moving up the flank as the Guardsman IFV ducked into the opposite corner.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8JrP14fewpQ/UAtLrPSORGI/AAAAAAAAAnE/K__OPnRYZ1M/s1600/Turn+3+End-+dylan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xA2p6Mcn4Zs/UAtMAlhQGXI/AAAAAAAAAns/Pgh84j6ZZMU/s1600/Turrn+2+End-+Dylan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xA2p6Mcn4Zs/UAtMAlhQGXI/AAAAAAAAAns/Pgh84j6ZZMU/s400/Turrn+2+End-+Dylan.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">In my turn, the gunship and missile tank continued to target the battlesuit in the trees, inflicting some damage, but not enough to bring it down. On my left flank, the IFVs zoomed into position, disgorging my commander and two units of infantry. With my commander's urging one squad made the cover of the trees before both units spent their remaining action targeting the IFV. The main gun of one of my armored vehicles also shot at the infantry carrier, inflicting some minor damage.
</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YJkp9Gpj_5M/UAtMEygf_rI/AAAAAAAAAn0/EeJncDnEHcM/s1600/Turrn+2+End-+Jeff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="395" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YJkp9Gpj_5M/UAtMEygf_rI/AAAAAAAAAn0/EeJncDnEHcM/s400/Turrn+2+End-+Jeff.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">In turn three, the Hyperion infantry disembarked from their carrier, opening up on the NAS squad in the woods, inflicting two casualties, while a second squad and the force commander followed up behind. On the other flank, the mech rounds the corner of the office building supported by the third Hyperion squad. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">My squads return fire, nearly wiping out the squad from the carrier while my IFVs continued to wear down their Hyperion counterpart. At the sight of the assault-class mech, my gunship and missile tank open fire. In a storm missiles, the great mech is nearly catastrophically damaged.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8JrP14fewpQ/UAtLrPSORGI/AAAAAAAAAnE/K__OPnRYZ1M/s1600/Turn+3+End-+dylan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8JrP14fewpQ/UAtLrPSORGI/AAAAAAAAAnE/K__OPnRYZ1M/s400/Turn+3+End-+dylan.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7_WQjHuiwWw/UAtL0LFSEEI/AAAAAAAAAnY/TGZDR2BxwcM/s1600/Turn+3+end-jeff2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7_WQjHuiwWw/UAtL0LFSEEI/AAAAAAAAAnY/TGZDR2BxwcM/s400/Turn+3+end-jeff2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ITrTRMdlOng/UAtLwJvTe1I/AAAAAAAAAnQ/NPAWWxU5oTE/s1600/Turn+3+end-jeff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ITrTRMdlOng/UAtLwJvTe1I/AAAAAAAAAnQ/NPAWWxU5oTE/s400/Turn+3+end-jeff.jpg" width="381" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
In turn four, the fresh Hyperion squad, supported by their commander and marker-light drone, succeed in destroying the NAS squad in the trees. Fire from the drone and the SAW also put down two members of squad two. The IFVs continue exchanging fire to minimal effect while the second NAS squad guns down two Hyperion soldiers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qA_xm3HtUTE/UAtL583y8oI/AAAAAAAAAnk/fQJBnD4RL6k/s1600/Turn+4+End.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qA_xm3HtUTE/UAtL583y8oI/AAAAAAAAAnk/fQJBnD4RL6k/s400/Turn+4+End.jpg" width="383" /></a></div>
<br />
On the other side of the field, Dylan's Doom Mech blasts the unity gunship from the sky with a single shot, despite the massive damage inflicted on it. The support squad is yet out of range and fire from the remaining battlesuit misses. This allows time for the missile tank to calibrate its targeting computer and put the giant walker down for good. It falls in a heap near the third Hyperion squad.
<br />
<br />

<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Things begin to swing solidly in favor of the NAS in turn five. After the destruction of the rest of the NAS infantry by Hyperion forces, the NAS commander mounts his IFV, to regroup at table center with the missile tank. The partner NAS IFV is now severely mauled as is the Hyperion Guardsman troop carrier. The Hyperion third squad targets the missile tank, inflicting some hull damge, before half their number are incinerated in return fire. They fail their mental check, enter condition brown, and rout. Fire from the remaining battlesuit is inconsequential.</span>

The game wraps up in the final two turns, the missile tank destroys the remaining battlesuit that had moved into open ground as well as the flanking infantry squad that had moved into the trees. The remnants of Hyperion squad three manage to rally be are unable to significantly affect events after climbing onto the office building. In a file act of defiance, the Hyperion IFV rams the mauled NAS carrier, causing it to crash and be destroyed.

<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Dylan and I both noted the effectiveness of my two missile armed units compared to the other weapons fielded today. The gunship and missile tank accounted for most of the damage inflicted against the Hyperion forces. The missile tank, in particular, accounted for destroying most of two full infantry squads, and inflicted the lion's share of damage against the Hyperion heavy mech and two battlesuits, perhaps damage disproportionately high compared to the unit's cost. We're both looking forward to seeing how the 1.1 rules upgrade changes the game.</span><br />

<br />
<strong>Background</strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />In 2133, Lochrim Applications established a secure research center on the second planet in the Anderson System to exploit riches in the system’s immense asteroid belts. It remains unclear why no further planets developed from the detritus field aside from the inner two worlds, but it is has left a wealth of relatively easily accessible mineral commodities. <br />
<br />The demand for labor exploded in the system and northern european colonials made up the lion’s share of the workforce, eventually naming the planet Red Amsterdam by 2142. For the first decade Lochrim was richly rewarded for their investment in the Anderson system, with site year on year growth exceeding 15% per annum. As Lochrim continued to expand their presence with new facilities and smelter ships, the colonials began to resent the conglomerate’s brutal working conditions and comparatively low pay for non-Lochrim contractors. By 2157, open rebellion erupted in several major complexes and Lochrim was forced to call upon its considerable force of arms in an effort to quell the uprising. In response, the colonials formally requested to join the Colonial Confederation who quickly stepped in to their aid with troops of their own as well as independent mercenaries. <br />
<br /><strong>Lochrim Applications, 2133B, Site Sigma-Sigma-Four</strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />Sigma-Sigma-Four is the location of early Lochrim research into synthetic esoteric matter development. Long defunct, it is now a key element to security in the Anderson system for Lochrim. The site is planned as the fourth installation facility for project Damocles, an acquisition and targeting array that will allow Lochrim to accurately target ships as far out as the termination shock. Once in place, local command anticipates orbital missile batteries will quickly suppress additional aid to the rebellion, and dissuade Colonial Confederation encroachment.<br />
<br /><strong>Lochrim Objective:</strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />Prior to the installation of Project Damocles, Sigma-Sigma-Four must be secured. Your force needs to secure the central research building, install a kinetic barrier generator, and hold the facility. With the barrier active and in place, it is expected the cost to retake Sigma-Sigma-Four will deter any colonial efforts to restore control.<br />
<br /><strong>· Secondary Objective:</strong> Destroy the local comm station.<br />
<br /><strong>Colonial Confederation/Rebellion/Merc Objective:</strong><br />
<br />Lochrim holds the edge in strategic intelligence in this conflict. We’ve punched through the orbital defenses to give the rebellion a fighting chance, but our grip is tenuous. An enemy force is inbound to your position. Hold your ground and relay the Corporation’s intentions.Jeff Worleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02685249047143918590noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24505054893289469.post-12523583954828573702012-07-07T18:47:00.000-07:002012-07-07T18:47:23.133-07:00Perdita OrtegaPerdita is finished and the rest of her crew are coming along shortly after along with some pistoleros. <span style="font-family: Calibri;">Here follows the obligatory anniversary post.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Thanks to everyone who has followed and commented on the self-serving endeavor of 15mm Strife.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Most of the posts I make are “Hey!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Look what I did” posts, they aren’t groundbreaking, but they have helped me to stay focused and passionate about my hobby.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I don’t have a firm count, but I’m reasonably certain that over the last year I’ve painted more miniatures than the sum of all my previous forays into games like 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Vor and others.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I love to paint.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I also love learning new ways to expand the range of skills I can use at my modeling desk.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In the last year, I’ve tweaked and improved my sculpting ability, learned to use a CAD package to construct 3d models (and had a few printed), experimented with different painting styles, built conversions, DIY tools, and looked for creative ways to re-purpose everyday objects.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I wasn’t sure how long I would keep up with writing posts.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Aside from a couple spans of brief burnout, I’ve stayed with this, and completed most of (or continue work on) the projects I’ve started.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In the past, I tended to become easily distracted by new ideas or different hobbies altogether, but writing about my work has helped keep me on track. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Thanks for reading,</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just wanted to post quickly about my newly minted alien force for Gruntz. It's constructed from Micropanzer alien infantry and supported by GZG crusty mechs. This project has actually been sitting on my painting desk in various stages for months, I eventually had to settle on a simple color scheme finish it. The Micropanzer aliens were easy to paint once I got rolling. I was less happy working on the Crusty mechs, the castings were rough and frustrating to work with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Its a decent force to play Gruntz with, but sorely lacking in anti-vehicle punch. I haven't yet found any armor that I really like to use with this force, I may have to settle for some GZG Kra'Vak vehicles. The force is very close combat heavy as well, with three units lacking any ranged attacks at all. It will be a very different style of play compared to my previous human armies and I'm anxious to try it out.</div>

I've been painting some 28s again for skirmishing; I just wrapped up a small Inifity Ariadna force and have some Guild miniatures for Malifaux coming as well. I'm also going to branch out into some other genres and times, so you should occasionally be seeing some Age of Sail ships and possibly some other historical items. The lion's share of the posts will probably still be the 15mm sci-fi I'm so entranced with. This weekend I hope to post my freshly minted alien force for Gruntz.<br />
<br />
In addition to expanding my hobby interests, I want to improve and expand my painting and modelling skills as well, so...<br />
<br />
This is my first crack at blending, mostly following a Mike McVey tutorial found on YouTube. I went with a super-hero inspired color scheme, so I could play around with using some nice, bright colors. I never quite accomplished what I saw on the video, but I have a better handle on what the process requires now. Finding the right consistency of thinned paint was a chore, compounded (I think), because I was using light colored paints with lower pigment loads. Using paints from three different manufacturers perhaps didn't help matters either. <br />
<br />
I'm not too unhappy with the result except for the face, I decided that the shadows in the eyes were too light and tried using a wash. The end result makes her look clownish. That said, I used no dry-brushing or washes aside from the previously mentioned facial abortion I performed. If you have criticism, suggestions or resources to suggest to me in learning this technique, please post them in the comments.<br />

I just finished this Grav Bike- using a resin starship hull as the base, I reshaped it and added new detail panels from plasticard and brass wire sensor sweeps. The rider is from The Scene with a Micropanzer head swap. I'll be using it on table to coordinate artillery and orbital strikes.<br />
<br />
I was going to build a few of these using the starship hulls, but I could have just as easily built up the structure with plastic stock as reshaping the resin starship. I enjoyed building it so much I think I'll tackle some full-on scratchbuilds soon.<br />

I converted and painted this Infinity Line Kazak. I did nothing else game related.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.mayasphere.net/infinity/catalogo/280109-0031-maqueta1.jpg">original mini</a> had a coat slung over her shoulder in a very "model on the catwalk" style pose. Maybe the NRA has fashion shows? The original pose was so bizarre that I cut away the coat, left arm and a portion of the face. I sculpted in a whole new arm in the middle of lobbing a grenade. I like it much better, even if the pose doesn't quite seem to have the tension you would expect from a grenade throw. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the result, but I need to polish up my 28mm painting skill set again. Thanks to my buddy Anthony for the conversion suggestion.<br />

Since my family is off at a birthday party for a few hours, I thought I'd give it a try on solo mode, playing both sides using FUBAR.<br />
<br />
The Selta Federation is close to closing a far reaching diplomatic agreement with the enigmatic Ventoo empire. Realizing such an alliance would threaten the Union Republic's standing in the sector, Central Command dispatched a People's Cadre unit to kidnap the Selta ambassador, prior to signing the accord. The Republic hopes the bizarre Ventoo will see the ambassador's absence as an affront and cancel the arrangement.<br />
<br />
Selta intelligence has caught wind of the operation and the location at which the ambassador is being held, an abandoned supply depot in the Ventoo DMZ. A Selta Commando team is quickly dispatched to recover the diplomat.<br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="text-align: left;">Once at the abandoned depot, the People's Cadre quickly established positions around the dilapidated buildings while the diplomat was moved inside as a massive storm moved into the night-shrouded valley.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x5ruvaI1L1Y/T3jYLu9Y65I/AAAAAAAAAgE/jln0krFAHpQ/s1600/Peep+Setup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x5ruvaI1L1Y/T3jYLu9Y65I/AAAAAAAAAgE/jln0krFAHpQ/s400/Peep+Setup.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Turn One: The Selta Commandos arrive on their heels, the silenced engines of their armored cars unheard over the peal of the thunder and unseen in the dark.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YS-yj7sxAb8/T3jYcB9JkrI/AAAAAAAAAgM/H3acXhxfnDQ/s1600/Selta+AC+close+turn+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YS-yj7sxAb8/T3jYcB9JkrI/AAAAAAAAAgM/H3acXhxfnDQ/s400/Selta+AC+close+turn+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D91A2lZgjLc/T3jYz8ulQCI/AAAAAAAAAgU/t3wJcYfoLx8/s1600/Selta+AC+close+turn+1_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D91A2lZgjLc/T3jYz8ulQCI/AAAAAAAAAgU/t3wJcYfoLx8/s400/Selta+AC+close+turn+1_2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Turn 2: The armored cars drop the commandos at a grove of trees, just south of the depot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-alwsL2A5_sE/T3jZkBS6IKI/AAAAAAAAAgk/iGbwa8KtVg8/s1600/selta+AC+close+troops+turn+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-alwsL2A5_sE/T3jZkBS6IKI/AAAAAAAAAgk/iGbwa8KtVg8/s400/selta+AC+close+troops+turn+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8HzTAYhj4Ac/T3jZ43MSP5I/AAAAAAAAAgs/XcTmaCX88J8/s1600/selta+AC+close+troops+turn+2_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8HzTAYhj4Ac/T3jZ43MSP5I/AAAAAAAAAgs/XcTmaCX88J8/s400/selta+AC+close+troops+turn+2_2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Turn 3: The armored cars swing west around the depot, ready to extract the teams once they search the buildings. Alpha team moves up to the edge of the tree line, eliminating four nearby sentries with silenced SMG fire as Bravo team sprints through the driving rain towards their first objective, a disused warehouse.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With FUBAR, two of the kills I recorded should have simply been suppressions. Since they were surprise attacks, I will count these as kills until the People's Cadre units are aware of the Commandos. Likewise, up to this point Selta has had default initiative and I have not rolled any activations for the Republic units.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BbZB8nGIGs0/T3jZP0t_LNI/AAAAAAAAAgc/pfZfisHJtb8/s1600/Selta+Turn+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BbZB8nGIGs0/T3jZP0t_LNI/AAAAAAAAAgc/pfZfisHJtb8/s400/Selta+Turn+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Turn 4: Still undiscovered, Selta presses their advantage. Trying to pick out targets through the rain and hail, Alpha team, still in the cover of the trees, manage to down another sentry, one with a shoulder anti-tank rocket. Attempting to down another sentry near the collapsed building fails however, as his helmet takes the hit, stunning but not killing him. At his shout, the People's Cadre move to defend the depot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still with initiative, Bravo team activates, pelting the sentries with fire as they close near the warehouse door. The armored cars continue to swing around the west side of the depot to support Bravo team.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With all Selta units activated, the People's Cadre attempt to recover. I'm not activating the sentries squads as suppressed as they don't yet know the extent of their casualties. Some sentries return fire at Alpha team, but are unable to make contact through the dark and wet. A lone, sentry near the warehouse just manages to pick out Bravo team as they make for the warehouse; a well placed shot knocks down one of the heavily armored men, but fails to take him out of the fight. Two sentries at the rear corner of the warehouse, now in cover, lob armor-piercing thermic grenades at the lead armored car. Scoring five hits, they stun the crew and destroy the remote HMG turret. The red die indicates the activation penalty for the armored car in the next turn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bad news for the Armored Car</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Turn 5: Selta wins the initiative and Alpha team leaves the cover of the trees, raking the damaged building with their weapons, suppressing both the team leader at the door and the sentry just outside. The last man from Bravo team snap fires back at the sentry who shot at his squad mate, piercing his visor and killing him instantly. Bravo team charges into the warehouse... only to find it long empty.<br />
<br />
The armored car guns its engine past its damaged cohort, its turret heavy machine gun chewing up the wall near the sentries, but unable to make contact. The damaged armored car fails to activate due to the penalty applied the previous turn.<br />
<br />
Two additional sentries move up to support their comrades near the warehouse, throwing their own thermic grenades at the firing armored car. One grenade finds a vulnerable spot in the armor, killing the crew in a flash of light and heat, knocking the vehicle out. The suppressed sentries in the collapsed building are unable to react as Alpha team closes in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a_z3UI271G0/T3jbWjVN2fI/AAAAAAAAAhM/iqXWD7ksDx8/s1600/selta_peeps+turn+5_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a_z3UI271G0/T3jbWjVN2fI/AAAAAAAAAhM/iqXWD7ksDx8/s400/selta_peeps+turn+5_2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
Turn 6: Having won the initiative, the People's Cadre is unable to take advantage of the situation. The battered sentry squad near the ruin is pinned down, unable to react, and the sentries near the warehouse are unable to punch through the Seltan heavy armor with their assault rifles. Things are looking ill for the People's Cadre of the Republic. <br />
<br />
Under fire, Bravo team sprints to the nearby damaged armored car, which guns its engines to the next building. Alpha team decides to press home and eliminate the holdouts in the ruins, launching an assault. Unfortunately, the Republic commander is waiting and he and his men open fire the moment Alpha team breach the building. (This event plays to the scenario- normally in FUBAR you would move in attackers, defenders and simultaneously resolve the assault). In a hail of extremely lucky fire for the Republic, the net result is two suppressed and two dead commandos. In the ensuing melee, another is struck down.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Selta Commandos are brutalized by fire from the enemy command as they storm the ruin.<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Turn 7: The People's Cadre gains initiative again and surround the two remaining commandos, killing another. Surrounded, with another dead comrade at his feet, the lone remaining member of Alpha team screams to the rest of the unit to disengage over the com-net.<br />

<br />
I had a lot of fun playing and writing this one up. I might try it with a couple different systems as I check out solo play options. USE ME has been suggested and I think I'll give it a try. The reaction test system of 5150 might work well, also. While the People's Cadre hadn't quite made the victory conditions when I pulled the plug, it seemed likely, so the Selta opted to fall back.<br />

Thanks for reading,<br />

One of the great things about 15mm is co-opting miniatures from other scales to supplement your forces. I've been able to make use of minis from AT-43 and now Warhammer 40k with the Tau stealth suits below. The center mass is just large enough to hold a 15mm scale figure as a pilot, so they will work great as heavy battlesuits or light mechs. The guns on these stealth suits are larger than I like, but can overlook it for this project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made some simple changes to the suit- I swapped the kit legs for those of a plastic space marine to give a more human appearance to the warmachine. This actually worked very well as some design elements like vents and seams are very nearly identical between the two kits and the contoured lines on the legs match up well with the ovoid central chamber of the suit. I added some press-molded, hard edged armor panels from plasticard to the ankle joint to help tie the geometric forms of the shoulder armor to the legs. I'm pretty happy with the end result; I've completed three that will supplement my North American faction infantry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you squint, maybe, you can make out the camo pattern in the second photo. I did it using the airbrush blu-tac technique. It actually worked very well, I'm encouraged to keep working with the airbrush, but next time, I'll pick two colors with greater contrast. It's more noticeable on the table than in the photos, all the symbols and numbers are hand-painted, I couldn't find any decal designs I like for this army.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I got back into the hobby, I found that most of my GW paints, now several years old, had expired. I replaced most of my paint with Vallejo. For the most part I've been happy with that choice with the exception of Vallejo's metallics. It seems like it takes more motion from the brush when drybrushing and they don't level well when block painting. I may go back to GW metallics.</div>Jeff Worleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02685249047143918590noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24505054893289469.post-44720391686621662512012-03-17T09:25:00.001-07:002012-03-17T09:25:08.809-07:00SHM Casting PreviewSometime ago, I picked up my tools and set about sculpting a figure for 15mm sci fi. I'm don't take life or my hobbies all that seriously and my personality tends to bleed into my creative outlets; more so when fabricating something of my own and not just painting existing miniature lines. The image in my head was of a corporate mercenary commander, who, after having grown fat and balding years after being relegated to a desk job, is recalled to active command in the face of a crisis. <br />
<br />
I sent the figure to Gavin Syme with <a href="http://15mm.co.uk/">15mm.co.uk</a> for consideration to include in their SHM range. I was pleased when the figure was accepted and delighted when I received the first castings last week. The process wasn't entirely without hiccup, but the mini made it all the way through the process to production. You can see some of the end results below, and the mini should be available from <a href="http://15mm.co.uk/">15mm.co.uk</a> sometime in the next few months. I will try and get one of the samples painted up in the next few weeks to help pick out the detail.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I recently picked up a variety of 15mm vehicles from <a href="http://ravenstarstudios.blogspot.com/">Ravenstar Studios</a> Land Core range. The Fox Walker in particular was one I had my eye on and jumped at the chance to pick it up when it came on sale.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most of my 15mm projects have been straight build-outs and I had been getting burned out, so I decided to spend a little more time on this model, adding a couple extra details and some interest to the base. The model, like most resin, had a few air bubbles to fill- one can be noticed on the barrel in the photo below where I filled it with putty. Once these few pockets were filled, I shaved down and hollowed out the turret hatch to create a depression for a cut down Rebel Miniatures earth force mini to seat into and mounted the turret to the lower hull with neodymium magnets. I scratch built a simple hatch with plasticard and a rod hinge, and mounted it swung open behind the tanker. I pinned in a long length of brass wire as an aerial, pinning it bent down and modelling a a hasp to hold it in place. I modelled some rocks to the base for the tank to step over and primed the whole assembly black. </div>

I didn't change up much with the paint scheme, wanting the tank to fit well with the colors of the Earth Force marines I've already painted. I hand painted most of the markings except the two skull decals. The tanker was painted in a gray uniform, a different scheme than the infantry, but I wanted to pick him out a bit from the turret. I then finished the base and pinned three of the legs to the base before sealing.<br />

Had a blast even though I lost. We had 150 points to a side with an assortment of infantry and vehicles. I didn't execute my plan at the game's start when I got distracted by what I thought were easy targets and didn't fully make use of what was my best asset in the form of the heavy walker.<br />

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">I started buying 15mm scifi minis back in May, with my first purchases coming from Micropanzer. It had been nearly ten years since I had done anything hobby related with miniatures and initially looked to return to 40k since I already had a reasonably large collection of Games-Workshop minis, but found I couldn’t generate any enthusiasm for the setting and was disgruntled by a price hike right when I was looking to begin purchasing again. I’ve since been slowly parting with my 40k collection and building up new armies in hard scifi 15mm. It turned out to be just what I needed to rekindle my interest in this hobby.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">As of the end of 2011, I’ve painted in excess of 300 infantry models and perhaps 12 vehicles from manufacturers including Micropanzer, Rebel, Khurasan, GZG, Combat Wombat, CMG and some others I may have forgotten. Service from all was exceptional, with good communication and speedy delivery. I’ve painted a fair chunk of what I’ve received, but not all. I am going to try and whittle the lead pile down for a couple months before I purchase anymore.</span><br /><br /><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">I feel like a productive painter, but I find I do most of my work one or two days a week and crank out twenty models at a time. I don’t think I will stop doing my little marathon paint sessions, but part of my goal for 2012 is to paint at least one model a night, not too big of an investment given how quickly 15mms paint up. I also want to make better progress painting vehicles, I always seem to waffle around as to how to paint them and I loathe doing camouflage by hand. I’m hoping a borrowed airbrush will, if not ease the process, then at least engage me through learning a new skill. </span><br /><br /><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">There are other skills I want to continue to develop as well: I’d like to polish my sculpting chops a bit and see if I can’t have one of my own minis in metal by year’s end. I’ll continue to play around with various CAD packages and continue to develop my own vehicles and armor as I did with my hover drone last year; I’m still making tweaks to a multi-part grav tank I would like to get printed. I also have some ideas for scratch-build projects I would like to start (or finish).</span><br /><br /><span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">As far as new projects, I’m going to branch out a little from scifi. My last post had my first fantasy project and I’d like to do at least one additional Song of Blades and Heroes warband by the end of the year. I also have an old west skirmish project I’m starting that I’ll detail in the next few weeks. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">I’ve gotten in quite a few games with my son and another local player using a variety of different rule sets, with Gruntz having received the most play.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’m hoping to get games in more frequently as well as test the waters with some other rule sets as well, like Blasters and Bulkheads.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have a lot to look forward to in 2012.</span></div>

These are my Eureka Wood Elves for Song of Blades and Heroes. I used this batch of minis to experiment with my technique; I basecoated and drybrushed everything except the metallic parts before washing with Vallejo Sepia. In the future I may try an actual dip by incorporating some finish in the final wash. This band is done however, aside from a couple of GW giant eagles I may paint up to include with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got my second game of Song of Blades in yesterday, I had fun but increasingly feel as though luck in activation plays plays a more heavily handed role in the game than I would like.</div>

About eight weeks of work in pictures here, I didn't photograph everything.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A GZG grav tank painted up for my Lochrim army, I have two of this model painted as well as one of the grav AFVs with the same hull style. I really like the style of this particular tank, but being metal they're little bricks. I'd hate to drop one of them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wjXIMSlfxv8/Tu0dAeDM7TI/AAAAAAAAAYs/fa0WA0rvPsI/s1600/Update1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wjXIMSlfxv8/Tu0dAeDM7TI/AAAAAAAAAYs/fa0WA0rvPsI/s320/Update1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A Rebel Minis HAMR painted up to match the Earth Force Marines pictured below, I'm still looking for some decals- I'd like to add a little extra interest since the color scheme is fairly monotonous.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DyCEKkzQpxg/Tu0dDcdrXKI/AAAAAAAAAY0/785jlUZarFs/s1600/blogupdate10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DyCEKkzQpxg/Tu0dDcdrXKI/AAAAAAAAAY0/785jlUZarFs/s320/blogupdate10.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Both of these minis have been seen before, but I've tweaked the paint schemes and added some unit markings. I never used decals at all when doing 28mm, but I find I like them very much for 15s.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e_RsiOTL68c/Tu0dIFU_xTI/AAAAAAAAAY8/hQ9fZAh9RM4/s1600/Blogupdate2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e_RsiOTL68c/Tu0dIFU_xTI/AAAAAAAAAY8/hQ9fZAh9RM4/s320/Blogupdate2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
GZG UNSC. I really like these models and I'm pretty happy with the paint too. I have a large mechanized platoon of these guys mounted in Combat Wombat tanks. The tanks are almost set, they just need basing and this little force is finished.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WY-j58lN13k/Tu0dNh_4TCI/AAAAAAAAAZE/8AnMeumpTv8/s1600/blogupdate3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WY-j58lN13k/Tu0dNh_4TCI/AAAAAAAAAZE/8AnMeumpTv8/s320/blogupdate3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Earth Force marines. This army has been painted up mostly with the intent of using it to demo various games systems. I have 80+ of these painted up now, including heavy machine gun and sniper bases.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z40rh69kad8/Tu0dSBd5KbI/AAAAAAAAAZM/JZ6gklpsl1s/s1600/blogupdate4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="118" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z40rh69kad8/Tu0dSBd5KbI/AAAAAAAAAZM/JZ6gklpsl1s/s320/blogupdate4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
GZG Cyclops suits; I have six of these completed for use as heavy squad support specialists for the Earth Force marines.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Earth Force HMG teams. I team based these and my Earth Force snipers for Gruntz.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
